with the highest-quality finishes in the world it’s…

AS GOOD AS IT GETS

First some history. In 1888 the enterprising Max Winkelmann founded a lacquers and paints company in Hamburg, Germany. Shortly after, he opened his own paint factory and began producing his first paint, called “Crystal White.” The first application for this white enamel was for ocean liners and Max soon was supplying paint to the major shipyards and even the Kaiser. The applications grew in variety and included the Hamburg Tram Company. By 1898 he was selling a number of different paints and realized it would be smart to market all his different products under one name. The name he chose was “Glasurit.” “Glasur” means glaze or enamel, so Glasurit reflected the enamel-like glaze and hardness of his paint finishes and promised outstanding quality.

Twenty-five years later, Glasurit became a registered trademark and its chemists earned a reputation for the development of excellent synthetic resin paints and enamels. In the middle of the 20th century the demand for paints grew dramatically and the car industry became a formidable market for Winkelmann and Glasurit.

In 1964 Glasurit proved its leadership in technology by introducing the 54 Line—the first-ever metallic-paint mixing system for automotive refinishing. The next year BASF purchased Max Winkelmann’s company.

In 1992, in response to the need for finishes with dramatically lower VOC, one of the first waterborne basecoat systems, Glasurit 90 Line, was launched. It soon became the market and technological leader in this field. In addition to a significant reduction in solvents, this paint system offered all the excellent features of conventional materials in terms of appearance and resistance. Glasurit 90 Line was efficient, economical, easy to use, safe, and environmentally friendly while producing rich, deep, brilliant world-class finishes.

The mid-1990s saw the introduction of Glasurit 22 Line, a high-solids refinishing system for solid-color finishes, and Glasurit 55 Line, a solvent-borne basecoat-clearcoat system. Meanwhile, Glasurit 90 Line became the leading waterborne basecoat in Europe. The fact that Rolls Royce® cars, long a world-standard in elegance and quality, and the fabulous Maybach® luxury cars use Glasurit 90-Line waterborne as the topcoat is strong testimony to the quality of the Glasurit brand.

Today, Glasurit brings to the collision repair business innovative ideas, best-in-class technology, the highest quality finishes available, and truly integrated solutions. The Glasurit product portfolio focuses on productivity achieved through the system approach. Glasurit products are logically and systematically matched so that a collision facility can enjoy ease of use, less material used, and faster cycle times—all of which leads to greater productivity and more satisfied customers.

The Glasurit System is based on four basic principles. Glasurit is:

Logical — To a collision facility this means working in clearly defined steps.
Easy to use — Work methods are fast, uncomplicated, and efficient.
Efficient — Use minimum products with maximum flexibility. Glasurit 90-Line is a good example; it offers a 95% reduction in waste over solvent-based products.
Reliable — You can expect the highest-quality end result from the least-possible effort. Case in point: Glasurit clearcoats lay down like glass and do not require polishing.

Many paint manufacturers offer products that exhibit one of these principles, but only BASF’s Glasurit system gives you all four.

As a leading global supplier of coatings for new automobiles, BASF’s refinish business is able to stay abreast of evolving paint technologies worldwide. That knowledge and experience is applied to Glasurit repair finishes that deliver results indistinguishable from original factory finishes. Nearly every manufacturer selling vehicles in North America recognizes the fact that the Glasurit brand meets the quality and performance standards for repairing its respective vehicles. In fact, BASF has earned approval from every major manufacturer in the world.

Glasurit has a long, proud history of being the ultimate in finishes. These products are created to work together as a system and provide a quality, long-term finish. Glasurit basecoats, clears, and primers have specific chemical components that are designed to link into each other so that each layer in the coating film is compatible with the others. By adhering to the system principles, Glasurit promises collision repair facilities logical, easy-to-use, efficient, and reliable products that yield world-class finishes.
